How to Protect Yourself from Rape in Kenya

Sexual violence is a serious concern in Kenya, and taking proactive measures can help reduce the risk of assault. Here are essential safety tips and information on where to seek help if needed.

Choose a Safe Environment

Always stay in public, well-lit, and populated areas. Avoid isolated locations, especially when meeting someone new or traveling alone.

Inform a Trusted Person

Let a friend or family member know your whereabouts, who you are with, and your expected return time. Use apps like Google Maps or WhatsApp Live Location to share your location in real-time.

Arrange Your Own Transport

Use trusted transport options such as ride-hailing services (Uber, Bolt, Little Cab) or personal transport. Avoid accepting rides from strangers or casual acquaintances.

Set Boundaries and Communicate Clearly

Be firm about your personal boundaries. If someone makes you uncomfortable, express your concerns clearly and leave the situation if necessary.

Be Cautious with Alcohol and Food

Never leave your drink or food unattended, as they can be spiked. If you start feeling dizzy or unwell suddenly, seek help from a trusted individual or venue staff immediately.

Trust Your Instincts

If a situation feels unsafe, remove yourself immediately. Your safety is more important than social etiquette. Have a backup plan, such as a friend who can pick you up in an emergency.

Learn Self-Defense

Consider taking a self-defense class to learn basic techniques for protecting yourself. Organizations like Kenya Women’s Empowerment and Self-Defense Initiative (KWESI) offer personal safety training.
